Will I still be in status????

I am on a F1 visa - just completed OPT - which ended May 31st, 2003. Now I know I have 2 months after that date to either leave the US or get back into school. My question is - I am within that period which is ending July 31. I have applied to colleges but is not getting anywhere fast. If I get accepted and gets a new I-20 before July 31st, BUT school does not start until say September - do I need to leave the US and return, or can I stay here and be legal while waiting to start classes in Sept.? I am somewhat confused on the issue. thanks

Youa re very much legal till sept. My opt expired in May, joined back school in July, was in legal status.
