Will I need reentry permit?

Hello,

I'm a permanent resident (green card) living in Washington.
I will be leaving to Japan on August 11th for a year for a study abroad program.
I plan to be back in US on September 2011.
However, I will be back in US for a week in this upcoming October 2010.

My question is, will I need the reentry permit in this case? (or in other words, will I lose my green card?)
The requirement says reentry permit is for people who will be outside US for a year or more.
But since I will be back in US for a week in this upcoming October, my abroad period will be 11months (Oct 2010 - Sept 2011).

Basically my schedule will be like this,

Japan: August 11, 2010 - October 22, 2010
US: October 22, 2010 - October 25, 2010
Japan: October 25, 2010 - September 2011

Please let me know asap. Thanks

as long as you dont stay a year outside, you dont need a reentry permit. the green card is valid for a year.
To be on the safe side, i recommand you get a reentry permit.

If you expect to be abroad for 10-11 months, get the permit. Something like airline flight cancellations or an illness or injury, or some other unforseen circumstance could extend your trip beyond a year.

And once you past 6 months, you invite more hassle at the port of entry, but showing the reentry permit mostly prevents that hassle.

Thanks for the reply guys!

But, here is my other question.
Does the 1year requirement stands for 12consecutive months?
So is my case okay? (Like I said, I will be back on this October for 5days.)

But I will get a hassel when entering US right? (But I do have a reasonable excuse because I'm a college student in US and doing a study abroad program).
