Greetings:

We are 3 months away from filing N 400 form for Citizenship. We have been lazy in changing my wife's last name on her passport, green card etc. What I was wondering if any one knows the exact process to be followed.

This is my understanding please confirm.

I believe there is an option I can change her last name at filing N 400 - Please validate.

Or I go ahead and first change her name on Indian passport and then change it on Green card. Does any one know how much time does this process take for doing name change.

Any help on this regard will be highly appreciated.

Thanks for your time in advance on this.

Best regards,
Haresh

Requesting your name change through n400 application is the easiest way....

and yes your wife can request a name change with her n400 application.

forget indian passport...let it have her old name same with gc....let everything be the same way as it is now....

just request for a name change when you apply for n400....

Name Change during N 400 phase

you just write down what the new name you would want to have in the n400 form. there has a question regarding name change. read the n400 form carefully.

fill in the new name --> interviewer will confirm with the applicant about the new name change --> USCIS submitts the form to the court for legal name change --> you get your name changed and printed on the naturalization cert.

Thanks for the update. Please let me know how do I get rest of the items name changed like Indian Passport, bank statements etc. - Thanks for your time in advance - Best Regards Haresh

k ideally, once you get your name changed through n400(american citizen)>>u will not be able to renew or make changes to your indian passport as you wont be a indian citizen anymore.

second,u will have to mail a certified copy or i guess a notarized copy(i am not sure about this maybe even a copy of ur name change) to all the agency's u have relationship with...banks/credit card unions....ssn

thanks in advance

Hi Haresh,

I am in the same boat as you are.

We filed our N-400 and did not opt for name change for my wife. The reason we did not want name change and naturalization at the same time is because it would delay the approval process in the final stages because of the name change.

What we plan to do is get the naturalization done and then the name change can be done in other legal ways through county courts etc. which is much faster once naturalization process is complete.

Hope this helps.
