I read here and see people talking about "name check". Could anybody explain me what the name check is for? Why do we need it? I sent n400 already, but not sure if i need it later?

So sorry for my ignorance:p . Thanks for all replies:)

Name check is something that is done by USCIS/FBI, not you. It is simply a background check on your name and your civil/criminal history. If anything comes up, FBI informs USCIS and they decide then weather to grant you an interview/citizenship or not.

USCIS said all name checks pending more than 6 months are targted to be finalized by February 09. I wonder if anybody has been waiting more than 6 months for name check.

It's a program managed by the FBI. It's called the FBI National Name Check Progarm ( FBI NNCP). It goes back to FBI Director Edgar Hoover. It checks your name, NOT your fingerprints against all databases and check whether there is a match somewhere in their systems.

It is widely used not only for citizenship applications but also gets applied to you when you look for a govt job.-
