The Indian companies that I interview with ask for Social Security no. in the very first phone call they make. Does anyone know what they do with the SS#?

Do not give them! It is not required until you accept their offer. Even if they want to check up background, they should not ask on first time itself, unless they specifically tell you why.

As far as my understanding goes social security number should be given only to certain places such as banks, employer, credit card and for loan etc. No company unless they hire you have a right to ask for SSN.

Infact following things are also prohibited in an interview according to US laws -
Asking about Race, Cast, Married / unmarried status, Age etc. These laws are set because the decision to hire you should not be biased by any factor apart from your qualification and capabilities. If you find any partiality like this you report this.

Desi companies are too much. They will go to any extent for exploitation. You can directly tell them that you are not supposed to give it to them and if you want you can report this issue. If they want to check your background, they can do so through the references.

I don\'t care whether they check my background. After I gave my SS#, this company lowered their salary and relocation package. Moreover, I think they use this SS# for tax purposes. If they want to write off some amount as interview costs against a SS# to reduce taxes. Anyway everyone beware.. do not give the SS# and inform IRS about the company tactics. That is what I am going to do.

I guess that they checked your credit rating, where in some cases get the average or annual income. Perhaps, they have lowered your pay due to that...I saw your message about HTC. If this is the company, do not join. It is not worth it, my friends are there and it is typical desi co.
