why advisable to wait more than 4 years 9 months?

It was said previously that it is advisable to wait something like 5 years 1 months rather than applying exactly 90 days before the 5 year period in order not to appear too desparate.

What is the issue? I know many people who applied as soon as they could. And I would really like to get this started. I am coming up in a couple of months.

thanks.

There have been folks here on the forums that have applied 90 days before their 5 year time and have gotten their application sent back to them stating that they have applied too early.

If you are even 1 day off your counting of days...BCIS will return your form and you'll have to refile etc.

Save yourself some potential issues and give it a couple of days or weeks so that there is no way you're applying too early.

Giving it a couple more days or weeks isn't going to make a huge difference when it comes to overall timeline.

Good Luck!

Another issue could be if, by stroke of luck, you get an interview letter before you complete 5 years you could be in a soup too!

Moral of the story, wait for 5 years plus atleast 1 week before applying.

MasterUSA.You and I have very similar dates

I agree with MasterUSA...it's better to wait a little while longer than to rush into this....especially since BCIS is so unpredictable and some district offices are moving much faster than others.

Just never know if you are one of the lucky ones that get processed lightning speed :D

That is the thing. What if your case is processed so much faster then others and then you get to a point where you can't move forward because you are still under 5 years and then you are probably going to get stuck because they put you on the "waiting" list.

Just wait until 5 Years and 1 Weeks Mark like others said and you are good to go.

Ladybuggy :D

No .It still shows up when I logged into my account. Is your VSC as well?I mailed my N-400,90 days prior to my anniversary and it got returned since October has 31 days.So I waited 2 weeks to be safe and remailed it.I hope I dont get date prior to my anniversary. But it is better if you mail it in closer to you anniversary date.

I believe the advice given here is not sound. Even in the worse case it is good to track that particular district office to see whether it is an "ultra fast" one or not and apply before the 5 years according to the usual times for that district office. I think there are only a handful of district offices that would qualify as ultra fast. For the rest, why give up the time advantage of applying before the 5 years? In my case, my district office has been processing within 6-7 month time frame. Why should I be worried about applying before the 5 year? I am not, and I am not afraid of looking desperate or anything like that. That argument is not very good either, on the same token one could argue that waiting too long to apply could mean that the person doesn't have enough interest in becoming a citizen. That's just plain absurd to me. Sorry, don't want to pick on anyone, but my experience in this forum tells me that it is plenty safe to apply within the 3 months (90 days rule) before the 5 year continuos residence requirement.

My 2 cents.

The logic behind sending it in at 4 years 9 months is that the INS would take more than 90 days to process your application anyway and hence your application would be in time for the 5 year anniversary. But with the current accelerated processing speeds, it is possible that you come up for interview before the 5 year anniversary and then you could get descheduled and go into an infinite loop of infopass/calling/waiting.
I waited until 4 years 11 months and sent in my application. I got my fingerprint scheduled within 3 weeks of the receipt of application and considering lightning speed of processing these days, I am reconsidering my year end vacation plans in order to be around just in case! My advise to you would be to send in your application atleast at 4 years 10 months.
Good luck.

My take on immigratio is do it when you are supposed to and never wait. I would wait for 3 or 4 days after 9 months is over but nothing more.

In this age just when you are filing there could be amnesty announced for millions of illegals and processing could shift to a year.

why wait?

I applied before 90days, it has nothing to do with you being desperate, the reason why they say that you can file before 90 days because it takes almost 4 1/2 months by the time you get interview date, take a calendar count 90 days backwards, say on dec 25 you meet 5 yrs count 90 days backward & send application but don't send before that, and make sure that you have updated your address after moving, if not update and then file, know your own story when you go to interview, like your first arrival date, how many trips outside u s & dates

I really would like to become a citizen sooner rather than later. So I'll wait a couple of weeks after the 90 days date and apply. I live in Manhattan, and I saw somebody go through the whole process in 3 months but I don't think it's the norm. Thanks to everyone who responded.
