White Passport?

Does anyone know what it a "white passport"? My parents recently got their GC and came to the US but will soon go back to their home country to close up their business, etc. What is the best way to ensure that they can come back to the US without risking losing their GC?

you are talking about "reentry permit". it looks and behaves like a passport. it allows you to leave US for upto 2 years without risk of losing GC.
 
no restrictions on reentry as long as it is valid (2 years). it is designed for those who want to keep GC status or those who do not have a national passport. of course, you need your destination country's visa. You need to file an application (forgot the form number) and it takes 3 months. you must be in US when filing, but could leave US after filing.

Isn't there a 6 mth residency requirement for permanent residents to maintain their status? Is the reentry permit issued under special circumstances or can any permanent resident apply for it?

GC holders must have a *permanent* residence in US. Visits upto 6 months that are temporary are OK. Visits upto 2 years that are TEMPORARY require re-entry permit. Any permanent resident can apply for it, there are no special circumstances.
Green card expires 1 year after you leave US.
 
Thanks for your reply, but I'm still confused. YOu've written that the GC expires one year after leaving the US. - Does this mean that even if you have a reentry permit, your GC expires?? In that case how can one claim to be a permanent resident?

Sorry is I was unclear. GC expires on the first anniversary of your departure UNLESS you have a re-entry permit or a returning immigrants visa.
