Which I-94 # to use in I-485 application?

Hi everyone,

I've got a question about the I-94 # which has been bugging me and getting me all confused. I am sure there is a simple explanation so please help me out, ok?

When I first entered the US in 2000, I was issued an I-94# card which has got a certain number ending in "07". When I got my H1B1 a year later, I got another I-94#, but my I-94 # is the same as the "original" I-94.

However, when I was approved for asylum in 2002, I was issued yet another I-94# but this time the number on the I-94 form is different! The last two numbers are still "07", but the first nine numbers are now different!

Is it normal for the I-94 numbers to change like this? Why didn't it change when I was issued an H1B1? Does my "latest" I-94 with the words "ASYLUM STATUS GRANTED ..." supersede all the I-94s before, and should this last I-94# be the one that I fill in the I-485 form?

Seems so simple, but it's getting me confused. Appreciate all help, everyone. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kelabit03,

I think if you are applying for adjustment of status (I-485), the BCIS needs a proof of your current status which is the I-94 card that says "Asylum status granted.........". When you applied for asylum at first, your proof of status was the I-94 card which shows your H1B1 and so on. Don't worry about the I-94 numbers because they don't mean anything. The fedral goverment prints millions of these cards every year and distribute them among the different ports of entry and local INS offices. It happened to be that the first two I-94's that you got had the same serial number !!!.

Thanks, EaglSkyB ... and another question!

Thanks, EaglSkyB ... that puts my mind at ease. I will use the I-94# that says "ASYLUM STATUS GRANTED ...". The reason why my second I-94 card has the same number as my first I-94 card is because it was "typed" in!

I've got a question that I hope you can help me with. Anyone is also welcomed to respond. It may be a simple question to most of you but this is the first time I am applying for the I-485 and I want as much as possible to get it correct, so please bear with me.

What are the most appropriate responses to these questions on the I-485 form?

Current INS Status? I put down "ASYLEE" which I feel pretty comfortable about. Do you all agree with me? What did you put down on your?

Expires on (month/day/year)? Our asylum status don't expire so what do I put down? Is N/A (Not Applicable) ok? How about "INDEFINITE"? I need help on this one. What is the most popular response? What is the "CORRECT" response?

Thank you, all.
