Hi
Can I stay in my native country after applying for citizenship and then just making trips here for Fp,interview and other formalities. Am I required to stay here after applying? Actually I am a single mom with a citizen child and would like to return to home country as soon as possible. But at the same time I feel that citizenship is imp. too. So can't decide!

As a permanent resident up until you become a citizen, you still need to maintain genuine ties to the U.S. as a RESIDENT -- show you still own a home or renting, paying bills here, etc. Further, you need to remain a resident of the state you're applying from during this time (otherwise you must have your case transferred to the new district office) On top of this, you will need to advise them of your exits / entries from / to the U.S. even after your N-400 is submitted, and it will look very suspicious is you're only here for events like the fingerprinting, interview, etc.

I agree with CanTex. If USC is important to you, I would recommend you return to your home country after obtaining USC. Good luck!

I too agree and wish to add something.

timesnap: From your memo it seems that you do have a strong desire to visit you home country. A good option would be to make a trip before you apply for citizenship but make it for less than 6 months. That way you do maintain your GC resident requirements.

Also plan out & make sure you have all your paperwork ready. Ship them the day you become eligible for applying for citizenship. At least some time can be saved with planning.

I recommend NOT sending the very same day you become eligible; some people have encountered an uninformed USCIS official at their interview who disputes how the days should be counted and there's also the persistent confusion on whether it's 90 days vs. 3 months before your 3 or 5 year anniversary that you're eligible to apply. I think it's best to wait a couple of extra days so this is not an issue to worry about at all.

Thank you so much guys. You all rightly confirmed my doubts. Thanks ! I guess I will just be stuck here for another few months after applying ;-) Thanks so much for your input.
