I applied for my SS# on the 13th of April 2006 and have not received it as yet.Why does it take so long. Then i get a letter in the mail today saying i will receive my SScard in 2 weeks. Then i called the SS office here and they say it was approved yesterday but i have not been assigned a number yet.How stupid.Guess i shall have to continue to put my life on pause even though i already have EAD and i am fed up of all this nonsense .Angrily awaiting my card now.Did anyone else have to wait really long to get a card?.My interview is in June and i cant get joint health insurance and other stuff to take to my interview. What if it takes longer than 2 weeks ?.Thus my user name FEDUP2K6

The same happened here. Well i went to the SSA office today and my information wasnt there on the computer. So they told me to return in 10 business days. And after I go again i have to wait like 2 more weeks for the SS card to come in the mail. Its so ridiculous!!

Yes it is totally rediculous.I need my SS# to get a job ,and start school .Heaven forbid when i get mine my name is spelled wrong or something stupid like that. Now i am counting 14 days exactly.I feel like calling the SS office every day to find out if they have my number in their computer yet just so i can have it sooner lol.

Many people has experienced the same thing. Actually some has been waiting more, is not all the time though, apparently some offices had that issue others with no waiting at all.

Good luck,

I went to ss office to apply for a number yesterday and same thing happened to me. I was told to wait for 4 weeks.   They said they'll have to contact INS and then they will get back to me with their decision.

So here is what I'm thinking: they will send an inquiry to INS, then INS will take their time to respond (we all know how fast they are). In the meantime SS database might already be updated with my information. Therefore, I am not gonna wait for them to receive a necessary response from INS, but I will go to SS office again in a week or so and I will ask them to check their database for my status. If I am in a system, I will submit a new application, and will get a card in about 7 days. What do you guys think about my plan?

Yeah, thats what happened to me too. they said wait 4 to 6 weeks but I received my SScard before that.

Hi i think that you should call the SS office every 2 days.Thats what i will be doing to check if they have my name in their computer yet, because i know that i got approved.Since they said that they cannot give me the number over the phone in the receipt i got for it .I will be paying them a visit really soon.

After I got married, I went to the SS office just to submit a name change. That took 6 weeks (maybe a little more) to arrive! So some of you guys should be lucky you got it in 2 weeks. I guess when you're waiting for a SS# to start work, it can be a frustrating wait though.

Now that I'm a PR, I guess I have to go remove the conditions on my SS card at some point. (Currently it says: valid for work with INS authorization only). I wonder how long that would take and if it's even necessary to do immediately. Is it just a formality?

I don't want to have to go through that pain again, right now. I only just changed the name about 6 months ago, never realizing that I'd have to change it one more time after becoming a PR.

Got mine in 9 days

I guess it all depends where you are and what region. I finally went to update my records after a year of becoming USC and received a new card in 9 days. I originally got my card in Jan 1992 when I was on F1 visa (without any restriction on the card), became USC on April 22, 2005. Thought it would be a good time to update SS records to show that I am now a USC so that if I ever need to use SS benefits they don’t deny because I am still showing in records a foreign student.
