When to submit GC? At interview or Oath?

I wonder when we need to surrender GC? At the time of interview or Oath? If it's at the time interview, is it possible to complete the interview but postpone the submission? I am scheduled to go out of country after 5 weeks from interview. How can I avoid GC submission until I return?

Thank you.

The GC is surrendered on the day you are scheduled to take the Oath, and prior to the Oath ceremony.

You can go in for the interview, and then request a later date for Oath (by sending back the Oath Letter if you get it sooner with the request to postpone it out. You may need someone to watch your incoming mail, if you are travelling soon after the interview to alert you when the Oath letter comes in, and mailing it out with your request to move it out.)

You give GC at the time of oath in return for the naturalization certificate, so you are never out of a document proving a valid status.

hi desicowboy,

If you cannot go to the oath ceremony, you should return the "Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony" (Form N-445) that USCIS sent to you. You should send the N-445 to your local office. Include a letter saying why you cannot go to the ceremony. Make a copy of the notice and your letter before you send them to USCIS. Your local office will reschedule you and send you a new "Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony" (Form N-445) to tell you when your ceremony will be.
