When to get SSN restriction removed

Hi,

When can/should I go to the Social Security Administration office to get the "Not valid for employment" restriction removed on his ssn card? Can I go with just the passport stamp or should I wait for the actual card?

Also does anyone know the process to change the last name on the card? Should we change it in the passport at the same time?

thanks in advance.

Is it absolutely required to remove the restriction on the SSN Card ? I have not changed mine since I got my Green Card.

While it is not absolutely required, it is a good idea to do it. For example, you need to show your SSN card when you get a new job and have to fill out an I-9. With the restriction on there, you need to show the GC. Without it, the SSN card and a picture id (drivers license) is enough.
Removing the restriction also allows the SSA to update their records. This may come in handy later on, e.g., for retirement benefits.

Got it !!! Thanks ...
