When to call National Customer Service Center?

This is the message I got from my lawyer when asked what's going on with my EB1-OR petition at VSC with a RD of 5/29/02

"VSC is currently working on OR cases filed 6/10/02. Unfortunately, we are unable to inquire about your specific case until the VSC processing report shows a processing date that is 30 days beyond your filing date (approximately 6/29/02). As soon as they reach that date, we may begin the formal inquiry process"

Not sure if this is a BCIS policy or my lawyer made up their own policy. Should I go ahead and call the National Customer Service Center no at 1-800-375-5283 myself for a case status referral? Anyone called this number before and was it helpful???
