Hello

I was granted asylum and recieved my GC in 2005. Since then i have not visited anywhere outside US (including my home country). Can someone guide me as to when is the good time to apply for my citizenship? i've only heard things like you can only apply 5 years after the GC issue date. But if anyone who has applied for citizenship already can help me out i'd appreciate it.

Also, how long does the citizenship process usually take?

Just so you know for future ref, you cannot return to or visit your home country anymore, that is the main part about GC in cases like yours. They can revoke your gc if they find out you lied about your security in your home country. After all the whole case is based on the threats toward you if you return.

Takshila, this does apply to people who claim bodily harm if they return because of issues like gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs. I saw this on some tv lawyer's program and it made sense to me.
The case you mention is unique but typically most cases of asylum fall in the categories I listed.

aabbcc11 i completley agree with you. that is why i have not visited my country ever since i came to the US. I am hoping after the citizenship this wouldnt be a problem?
