Keeping in line with the obsession this forum has with name check and my curiosity does anyone know when is exactly the name check initiated?

-As soon as the application is filed?
-With Fingerprints?
-Or something random?

I am just wondering if I am already in the queue or not, yet.
Thanks.

Name check is initiated after along with your Finger Print. Even though it can be done separately, the Service Center usually initiates it after you get your FP done.

Why do you care?

Once you submit an N-400 form, it goes into the magic USCIS queuing system. You will eventually get an interview, and, for the most part, almost nothing you can do can influence that (there are cases (like mine - I was descheduled and then forgotten (as far as I can tel)) where you can influence things a little).

But, name check is pretty much a black hole that you have no influence on at all.

As soon as your case number is assigned...name check is different than finger print check
My understanding is that for N-400, USCIS initally submits subject's name, bio, and fingerprints to FBI all at the same time and request the name and fingerprint checks on the subject, though the results are returned separately.

'Care'?...I guess the earlier you are in the line the earlier you can get out...hopefully.

Thanks for the reply equate, second stage, N400Applier and Flydog.

Yeah, but everyone goes through the same processing, so it doesn't really matter.

As far as I can tell, your precedence in line is determined by your priority date. However as soon as you fall off the "fast track" (you hit name check, your file gets mis-routed and they "deschedule" you, whatever), all bets are off.

After submitting the N400 how do you know that case number has been assigned? Is it through the FP notice or you have to go online on USCIS web site?

N400 submit date 5/3/07
N400 received 5/7/07

They will generally send you I-797 - Notice of Action with Priority Date and Case number before FP notice (although sometimes they are sent together). Case # is also printed on your FP notice.

Alternatively, you can view cashed check online from your bank. They generally handwrite Case# on the FRONT of the check. Begins with three letters (ESC, LIN, WAC, etc) and bunch of numbers.

I found this interesting article on name check:

http://www.ilw.com/articles/2007,0403-mehta.shtm

I haven't read it completely, but it doesn't seem to say when exactly is the name check started. However, it seems to ring a bell that the name check is started at the same time the fingerprint request is processed, i.e. early on in the naturalization process.

Basically no one knows when exactly name check is initiated. It does not have to be tied to finger printing because name check is purely based on permutations and combinations of the name as opposed to the finger prints. Secondly, I have seen cases where name check was completed while the person's finger prints were not cleared and the person had to go for a second finger printing.

But truly speaking no one knows the exact triggering event that initiates name check process.

Thanks for the response. In my case I submitted along with a cashier's check. I guess I'll have to wait for I-797 and/or FP notice to find out my case #.
