When do I have to do the FP and how long?

I was wondering when will I be required to do the finger printing and how long does it take to get a GC stamp on the passport after finger printing? I filed I485, EAD, and AP at NSC on 10/17/01. I am still waiting for EAD and AP. Please share some light of wisdom on this issue.
