Hi firends,
Just a simple question. I rad this on some random website, and it brought a question to mind.
You see where is says, "and your spouse sponsored you to become a permanent resident" ?? What if the spouse did sponsor you to become a permanent resident, but you want out of the marriage before the 2 years and 9 months approaches? Could you still apply for citizenship if you divorced, but have to wait the 4y9m? Would your permanent resident status be revoked? What happens.
I the case I am referring, the permanent resident (w/ GC in hand) does not mind waiting for the 4y9m if this person could exit the marraige. It's kind of a touch situation since the marraige is a little shakey, but the 2y9m mark is approaching. If this person applies for citizenship at the 2y9m mark, then soon after divorces, it may look like a bad-faith marriage.
What do you guys recommend?
Apply without the sponsor, waiting the 4y9m? (if this is possible)
Is the sponsor still an important part of the citizenship process after the Permanent Resident card has been granted, other than allowing for a faster citizenship approval?
Thanks in advance.

When do I apply for citizenship?
If you are married to an American citizen, and your spouse sponsored you to become a permanent resident, you can apply for citizenship after 2 years and 9 months as a permanent resident. If you are not married to an American citizen, you can apply for citizenship after 4 years and 9 months as a permanent resident.
