I am a little confused, what's the W-2 form for?

I started working(Apr. 05) this year after marriage(Jan. 05), before that I only have on campus part-time job, all I have is Form 1042-S, from 2002 to 2004. So should I call my previous school ask for a copy of W-2? Or how can I get a copy of W-2? But I don't understand what's the purpose for officials to check W-2 form? I will have an interview on Jan. 19th, really worry about it now. Please anybody can help answer my question. Appreciate your help!!!

Tax return

I think W-2 might not be important. I think they want to know 1) how much you, most important, your petitioner earns, and if he can meet the requirements to support you. 2)If your petitioner filed tax and did not own the govt any money.

Since I did not show my 2004 tax filing, and the officer did not request it. She really wants the tax filings of my husband.
