What to put in the 'A' number if you don't have one yet

My case. I am working on H1B and had applied for Green Card through my employer in the EB3 cateogry. But I withdrew that case after my marriage to U.S. citizen (so that my company could use the I-140 approval for somebody else).

Now I am filing for green card through my wife, and have sent I-130, along with I-485 (along with other forms). The forms asked for my A-Number in a few places, and since I had never applied for a 485 until now, I assumed that I didn't have one and left the field blank.

Is this what we are supposed to do, or do I already have an A-Number (because I am on H1b) and I needed to locate it somehow?

I was under the impression that they are 'supposed' to fill in the field when they receive the documents and we should leave it blank for them.... dont' remember who told me this ... and as a result i did leave it blank on ONE of my forms (did put N/A) on the other.... this may explain why i am seeing no activity on my application after almost a month of sending it! I guess I'll have to wait for them to reject and send it back to me.

Thanks.
