What to look for in a lawyer?

How should I go about looking for a good lawyer? Certainly not based on price. But what should be the criteria? What should I ask or look for in the first 'free consultation' meeting/call?

Any advantage to hiring someone local versus out of town?

Good lawyers

I checked out websites, value / quantity of information, general attitude, and ended up with Siskind (www.visalaw.com) although Shusterman(.com) was good as well - those are factories but good quality factories with the personal touch - you can get an idea of the cost at the free/low cost intro meeting. I am not from Asia but it seems to me that a lot of law firms (not Rajiv Khanna) are playing the national touch and not much more - look for substance not pronunciation

One overriding thing to look for is membership in the American Immigration Lawyer's Association. In my opinion, it is difficult to practice good immigration law without being a member of AILA and lack of membership also indicates to me that the person does not handle enough immigration cases per year to justify membership, another bad sign. Years of practice are not so important since immigration laws change frequently (nobody has more than 3 years experience with AC21) but I would hesitate to retain an attorney who just graduated from law school in May, unless that attorney was working with someone with more experience.

Also, I would stay away if the attorney you want to hire has hooved feet and tail :-).
