What is security clearance?. Please help!!!!!!

Hello All,
If any of know something about this, please reply me.
Actually My visa is approved and I paid issuence fee also. Now my passport is in U.S Embassy, they said I need to wait until security clearance is done.

1. What is security clearance?. What they will do on that?.
2. How long does it takes roughly?.
3. How are the chances to get my passport with visa If I am at this level?.

Please share your opinions, please....

I am from india and I couldn't see anything in the Chennai Embassy FAQs

But I could see an entry about Security Clearance in Islamabad, Pakistan Embassy FAQs
