what is namecheck

how does one know if a namecheck is being done on their GC application? does it happen only at a certain stage in the process?
 
I couldn't find the information I was looking for. I am not interested in what a namecheck comprises of, what I am looking for is at what stage in the GC process can it happen? Is it done for everyone? If I have had a few FP appointments etc then does that have any link to namechecks?

Name check is done in all cases soon after filing of I-485.
In my case which was filed in Feb 2003, name check was initiated and cleared in March 2003. You can check whether your namecheck is cleared by asking during Infopass. Earlier, FBI used to respond after a few months if you send an email to FBINNCP@ic.fbi.gov regarding name check status.
 
Is Infopass the appointment system where I can go take an appointment and meet someone in the local office?

Have you played snakes and ladders? The namecheck is the big snake that waits at the top. Some people are lucky enough to avoid it and some people are even more lucky to slide down that great snake's back and these lucky ones will be sent to a gaping black hole. Only thing is you just have to wait when all the other players keep playing and move on and you do not know if you would even get a chance to throw the dice. You know nothing. Nobdy cares about you. You become a statistic, a number, a byte that exists somewhere in the system hoping it will be touched by someone, sometime ...... you can shout, plead, cry, beg and do anything that comes to your mind. You will stay at the tail of that great snake. Now my Friend: That great black hole is the mysterious "name check" for you.

Very true. I was lucky enough to avoid the name check snake but slide down another great snake called local office transfer and got transferred to a blackhole:D

My 485 was filed in Jul 2004. When dates become current for me Jul 01 then we are going to file my wife's 485. For me its likely that namecheck is cleared. If my wife's 485 gets stuck in name check, does it mean that my application would not be approved either??
