This sounds weird, but I don't know what my first name is now...

My name was AAA-BBB CCC, where you can clear see that CCC is my last name
and AAA-BBB is my first name. This is very common for Chinese.
After receiving my natualization certificate, I found my name becomes: AAA BBB CCC

Now I am confused. Next time when I need to fill a form. Should I put

AAA as first name, BBB as middle name ?

Can I put "AAA BBB" as my first name ? (which I prefer)

Thanks

If you have no hypen between AAA and BBB to indicate it is single entity/word. AAA will be considered as first name.

If the name on the cert is AAABBB without any space between them, AAABBB will be your first name.

does not matter hypen or space. AAA BBB is the first name. BBB does not become a middle name simply because you are naturalized. If it was a first name before, then it is always a first name. Of course if you change your name in the N400 application, that is another story.

u can file a name change via court

after my naturalization, i have made my first name as xxyyy carol lastname. because i added my english name as my middle name in my home country's ID and in the passport from my homecountry. i find this xxyyy combination to be better because there were occasions where i couldn't enter my firstname with a space in between or a '-'.

what did you put in your N-400 application form? if u leave 'middle' name blank, i think the USCIS system will not have anything entered in 'middle' name entry. but again, it's still depending on how the officer verified u'r information during your interview (i had my experience which the officer print out an approval notice and congratulated me on the spot - but with an incorrect A# on the paper ... luckily i noticed that and pointed out the typo(or mistake) to her ... and she corrected it immediately)

my green card was showing xx as my firstname on the front top part , but on the bottom on the green card (where u'r full name is listed ... it shows lastname >> xx>> yyy>> carol ... sth like that)

someone suggested that u can make a name change via court to make your first name to look like xx-yyy again.

My wife had a similar situation when transferring DL from other state
to TX. The DL Office guy told us to make a visit to SSN Office and verify
the names. We did that and clarified the first name, middle name and
last name confusion.

Mostly likely your first name is AAA BBB and your last name is CCC.
In any case, you should be able to check this with SSN Office.

Good luck

howdy_howdy,

So, SSN Office has the updated information when someone's name is changed ?
I didn't know that. This is a very helpful information. I actually don't care
my first name is AAA or AAA BBB(people just call me my English name anyway).
All I want to know is when booking a flight ticket, what should I put as first name.

Thanks, I will definitely check with SSN Office.

cw2001,

I put AAA-BBB as first name and left middle name blank on the N400 form.
I think on the green card, my name was already AAA BBB CCC.

Thanks.

CIS decide on their own what your name is

My full name is WWW XXX YYY ZZZ. Of course, YYY is my middle name, and ZZZ is my last name. And in essence, my first name actually is WWWXXX, but for all practical purposes my first name is WWW. Hence, often I go by WWW ZZZ.

My DL says "ZZZ, WWW XXX YYY and I'm okay with that
MY SSN says WWW XXX YYY ZZZ and I'm okay with that
MY GC says WWW for first name, X. as middle initial, and ZZZ for last name. But wait, what did they do to my "real" middle initial. INS trashed it.

So now for N-400 app, I put "WWW", a space, then "XXX" as my first name, and YYY for my middle name. When I went for my finger printing, they said, my name differs. So now I have aliases!! Probably the reason I got stuck in name check.
