What is my "A number"?

Hello all,

I'm filling out all the forms for family-based AOS (I-130, I-485, I-864, I-693, I-765, I-131, G-325) and keep coming across a requirement on each of the forms for my "A-number" or "A#" or "File Number A-........ " or "Alien Registration Number".

Assuming these are all the same thing, what is this? Whatever it is, I don't believe I have one. Do I need one - and how do I get it?

The only US immigration numbers I do have, aside from my H1B petition WAC... receipt and approval number, are my current H1B visa number, and my current I-94. Do any of these apply, or do I just leave this space blank?

Thanks in advance for any light you may have on this subject.

H1B is a nonimmigrant visa and this is a first time you applying for immigration benefits.
You do not have A# yet and do not worry about it. INS will promptly issue you one as soon as they receive your package.
Just leave that question blank or write “none” or N/A where you have to.

In my case, an "A" # with 8 digits were printed in the I-797 Approval notice under the beneficiary column. Is this the same as Alien Registration number? What is it?

That's exactly IT. UR Alien reg number. Wherever you have to refer alienR#, that's the one u should use.
However, I am not sure if the A# consits of 8 numbers, more or less. Mine consists of 9 digits total, the first one is "0"

It’s same number, 8 or 9 digits. Zero stands for “A”
You can write your number either like 0** *** *** or A** *** ***

Now I am getting confused and worried in this case. My A# strats everywhere like this:

A: 0** *** *** - with both zero and A. That's the the same number on my EAD, and all receipt notices + on the interview letter. IS there something messed up?

Don’t worry, NBC June04!
It doesn’t really matter if you put that zero or not.
I personally prefer to put “A" and then "0” on the beginning and always do that, but the receipts keep coming back with with A** *** ***.

I just went through my immigration folders. All my receipts and travel documents from INS have my A number with no zero (eighth numbers) and only my old EAD’s all have zeros (nine numbers) on them. Go figure…

yap, that'sconfusing. All my INS docs state A 0** *** ***. Weird! Well, as long as everything go fine. I guess it's really nothing to bother. Maybe these numbers increase with the number of immigrants
Can't wait until my interview. Don't know whether to be happy or scared now. Although marriage in good faith, we are changing addess right before the interview, think of preparing new I-846... The A# is the least I am worried about right now. Good luck guys. And cross fingers for all of you
