What is EAD?

Can somebody tell me what EAD is? My attorney never mentioned this when he filed my I-485.

Employment Authorization Document - You can use this to work anywhere while your AOS (485) is pending...
You can file it along with your 485 or anytime after you get your 485 receipt notice. You can apply it yourself at the local INS office as well - Form 765.
