what is additional review

Folks early on in Feb this year I opened an SR and got that my security checks are pending and I was advised to contact again after 6 months. In July I again opened an SR and got a following reply today. What is additional review by the way. Does it mean I am past name check black hole?

"Based on your request we researched the status of this case.We are actively processsing this case.However we have to perform additional review on this case and this has caused a longer processing time.If you do not receive a descion or other notice of action from us within 6 months of this letter,please call customer service at the number provided below."

That's standard canned reply from USCIS...nothing much help!
 
Obviously USCIS personnel have been using all kinds of terms at their wish to describe case status: extended review, additional review, final review, you name it. Nobody knows whether they have specific meanings, most likely nothing. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to see more theories about USCIS extended review.
