What if I am absent from the USA?

I got my conditional green card in November 2004. I am planning to move back to my country in February 2006 and stay there, so before I could apply for the permanet card. (I moved here with K1 visa and got married).

My question is what difference does it make that I am not in the USA (I am still married) and what do I have to do to get the permanent card - can I apply for it from my home country? And if I decide that I would like to get my US citizenship, would that be possible?

Thank you!

The Green Card is supposed be issued to and used by someone who has established permanent residence in the United States. I am not sure how you could get it or keep it if you moved back to your home country. As far as satisfying the eligibility for citizenship is concerned, you would need to establish a minumium of three years of residence (in the case of marriage to an US citizen) in the US AFTER receiving the green card.
