What happens when a notice is lost in the mail?

My N-400 PD is June 22, 2005. Local office is Norfolk. I have not even received a fingerprinting notice. If the notice got lost in the mail, what would CIS do? How can I keep my application alive?

Am getting concerned as I read about people who applied around or after I did and are almost at the end of the process...

i do not think USCIS would know the your notice has lost thou. if your PD is June 22 and you have not even got a FD, if i were you, i would be very concern about it and i would schedule an infopass appointment to visit the DO. or you can call 800# to check if they have already scheduled the FP to you. if they did schedule the FP a while back, and you have not recieved the notice, it means it losts somewhere else.

I am not sure what would happen to an applicant if he/she did not show up to the FP appointment.

anyone knows if it means the application is auto-withdraw, or what not?

Welcome to the club JoeF! Same thing happened to me, FP on 25th, my travel plans got canceled.
You are not alone my friend :)

Since I got my FP notice just today, I can shed some light on it.
It says:
"If you fail to appear as scheduled below or fail to request rescheduling, your application will be considered abandoned."

They scheduled my FP appointment for the day after Thanksgiving... So much for my plans to travel out of town ;)

FP on blackfriday?

would ppl line up in ACS waiting for "good deal" after thanksgiving dinner?

hee hee

What happens if the notice was not received though? How can I find out if it was even sent?

Also, if they consider it abandoned, do they send out a denial notice or any kind of notice?

Superho,

I would make an Infopass appointment without delay, TODAY! There are people who applied months after you, who already have their FP appointments. You can hardly be held responsible for failing to receive the notice in the mail. But if I were you, I would try to sort it out immediately.

Quite often, the online status doesn't give much (if any) information. But you could do as JoeF advised, and check your online status. There is a chance that if the application was considered abandoned, it might be stated there. But definitely, you need to make an infopass appointment to find out if a FP notice was mailed.

Please let us all know what happens, okay?

I just hope he/she can even get the online status display some info.

I could not get my case added until I received my interivew letter, and it was the first, and the last status I got from my online acct.

Superho,

We are on the same boat, my case is worse than yours, my PD is March 23, 2005 and I am still waiting my fingerprinting letter from VSC. I checked from Infopass and my senator's office, it is not scheduled at all. I don't know how to push VSC.

wwwwwg,

That is awful! I hate to mention this, but I sent in my N-400 after you (at the end of March) and as of last month, I am already a citizen! It's hard to understand why you're still waiting for your FP notice! At least you have found out that a notice hasn't been sent out yet, so there is no possibility that your application could be considered abandoned. I hope you receive the notice SOON, and that the rest of the process will be much faster!

Is your DO also Norfolk?

Guys

I regularly check the online status. It just acknowledges receipt. I also called CIS this week and was told that there is no info they could give me. They said the application is processed by the local office at Norfolk. The appointment letter would come from there. They also gave me the standard line that they are processing Feb 10 right now and your date is June 22, blah blah...

After reading various postings and also Ron Gotcher's advice on his site, I decided to make an Infopass appointment. After trying all day, the system finally let me in. I have an appointment on Dec 1. Drive over 120 miles to ask a question...?

I can't possibly think what could be the problem. Although I payed the fee with one cashier's check for $390 and the notice said I overpaid and would get a $70 refund. However, I never got the refund, so I figure it was applied to the fingerprinting fee. If that is the problem, then CIS has the biggest bunch of idiots on God's green earth working for them...

i believe they gave you the process time for the naturalization in your local DO rather than the estimate of how long it would take to get the FP

I do not think you overpaid. $390 is the fee (320) + fp (70).
What notice did you get, and from whom?

Joe
Is there any one or any place where I can contact either by phone or writing at VSC? The national number is quite useless. The contractors who answer the phone say they have access to the same info as we do on the case status website. I thought about writing to the address I sent the N-400 to, but I don't know if it will make it to a case officer...

The same thing happened to me. I made an infopass appointment and found out that the notice was actually mailed out (I did not receive it). The officer printed the notice and give it to me.
As it happened to be a Wed (the day FP's are scheduled at Norfolk) I lucked out and gave my FP's the same day.

Hope this helps

Thanks! That definitely helps. Can you tell me how long it was since they had mailed your original notice until you went to visit them? Unfortunately, the only appointment I could get is for a thursday, so if my situation is similar to yours, I will have to go back again... ah well...

Actually, my wife received her FP notice and I didn't. So I waited for a month and a half or so before I went to check the situation out. Here are my details.

My details are as follows:
PD: 4/05
FP notice 7/05
I went to check in 9/05 and gave the prints on the same day
ID: 11/05
Oath scheduled for 1/06.

Hope this helps.

It seems that the FP notices delay problem is prevelant in Norfolk or ocassionally it happens it other DO's as well?. Does the FP notice get sent out by VSC or the Norfolk DO . I will soon be applying from Norfolk.

I-400 Considered Abandoned due to no FP

I just received a notice that her I-400 is considered abandoned. The reason? The USCIS stated they sent (one) fingerprint notice, but I didn't recieve it. I should have been aware that I needed to go in for fingerprints and followed up - but I didn't want to "bother the busy USCIS people."

My advice . . . . follow up early and often. I sent in my I-400 in 8-2004 and now 13 months I need to decide to either request to reopen or send in another I-400 and start from scratch.

Any idea when they consider it abandoned? It seems that if you inquire before the published processing date then it should not be trashed. After all, the CIS people have themselves told me that I have to wait until the published date is reached.

Do you know how to reactivate the N-400? I looked for info but I could not find it.

I sent a letter to both VSC and the Norfolk office. It probably won't do any good, so I will have to find out when I visit them in 11 days.
