What happens between 485 approval and GC ordering

Is the issuance of the physical GC contingent upon stamping the PP for 551 after 485 approval? Is this "temporary evidence" of permanent residence required at all ? Is the order for the physical GC placed based on info collected & entered during /after PP stamping?

If so, where are the pertinent rules/materials ?

Yes. After 485 approval, you need to get your passport stamped for temporary evidence. At that time a fingerprint of your index finger is taken on a form that is eventually used to produce the actual card. This form has other personal info that I guess is filled out by INS.
The temporary evidence is the ONLY evidence of your lawful PR status, not the I-485 approval. The temporary stamp is accepted for re-entry into US, for employment eligibility verification, SS cards, etc. I-485 approval is NOT accepted at any of these situations.

nkm-oct23,

Thanks for your explanation.

A friend of fine lost his passport a day after he got his 485 approval notice in the mail. I guess he has no other option but to wait till he gets his new passport ....
