What does 'Second A File Not received' mean?

I see a few postings stating that during the N400 interview, the officers are telling the applicants that the second A file is not received and hence a decision on the case cannot be made immediately after the interview. What does this mean? Any body can throw some light into this? Thanks.

In most cases an individual has only one "A" file, but there are some situations where INS creates multiple A files for an individual and never consolidates them until the person applies for naturalization.

Some scenarios where one can have multiple A files are:
- Used practical training during F-1
- Filed multiple I-140s during green card processing
- Filed I-485, then did CP

etc. etc.

INS supposed to send all related "A" files to local DO before the interview, but sometimes they don't. When the officer checks the system they find out that other A file(s) are missing and then they request it.

From what I have seen from others experience is that it usually takes 2-4 months for you get the oath letter.

I am also stuck with it, it has been more than 3 months and I haven't heard anything yet.

Hope this helps.

How will USCIS identify that an application has more than one A number

Thanks. Since we mention only one A number in the N400 form and since an A number is not tied to a social security number, how will the USCIS determine that a candidate has multiple A numbers? Thanks.

I have 5 A numbers

When I look at all of my immigration documents dating back to 1993 (OPT on F1, EAD's, H1B's, GC etc.), it looks like I have 5 A numbers. Four of the A numbers were assigned by TSC and one by VSC (Green Card One). Since my N400 interview is at Dallas (TSC office is in Dallas), I hope they would have the four A files in Dallas itself and would have got the one from VSC on time for the interview. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks.
