What do we mean by visa no. allocation?

Hi,

I thought, since only when the PD is current, we can file for 485 and the A# is the visa no. given to our case. Am I right or need to understand something else too?

In particular, what exactly do we mean by visa no. allocation?
When is it assigned to the 485?
