What did you do when you found out?

What was your reaction when you found out you won (got selected for further processing) in the DV program?

My first reaction was disbelief. Since the letter says nothing about winning the lottery, I had to reread it twice to make sure I understood what "selected for further processing" mean. After I convinced myself that the letter was in fact an official notification to lottery winners, I carefully called my wife and told her. At first she was having a hard time believing it as well. After it sunk in, we looked at each other then decided not to celebrate until we get the physical green card. Call us superstitious, but we are worried that celebrating early could somehow screw the luck.

How about you?

We were superstitious also because of last year. My husband got selected last May 2011 in the infamous DV2012 Debacle, so we had seen the famous "selected for further processing" letter in all its glory  Then we'd experienced the crushing disappointment and shock two weeks later when we found out they'd messed up oh so very badly and we were disqualified.

This year, I checked after May 1st. Not sure when exactly but I wasn't all that hopeful so I wasn't sitting on the edge of my seat or anything. I nonchalantly checked first my husband's confirmation number - NOT SELECTED. Which is what I expected for I did not think it would happen twice in a row. Then I left my own for a while, and came back and checked it, fully expecting the same NOT SELECTED. Except, lo and behold, I got that lovely letter that said "You are among those randomly selected for further processing in the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program for the fiscal year 2013 (October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013 ). blah blah blah"

What did I do? or think? I remember sitting there with my husband and saying "Can you believe it?" He asked "What?" I replied "We got picked again, for the Green Card thingie". He said "OMG, no way!" I said "Yes, way". We weren't very excited at all because of last year. We thought we'd wait and see how it goes because they could screw it up again (we're in IT so we are very cynical of computer systems). It took at least a month before we finally took it seriously and started talking about pursuing it for real. We didn't trust that they'd pull the same fiasco again.

I remember I went several times on the website on May 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I didn't pay attention I thought that the link was only to check results of DV2012. I tried to follow the link, I paid attention to use Explorer (I usually use Firefox), I entered the number and I saw the sentence "selected for further processing". I am usually very superstitious but not this time. I was at work, I was very happy but I didn't tell anyone. Then I read the information on what to do and then I got scared because the letter said there are 100000 selectees for only 50000 green cards. I didn't know yet about the CN and all the rest. I thought that the priority was given to the persons who return the form first. Then the instructions were not very clear on how to process for an adjustment of status. I didn't know if I had to return the forms or not. I even thought that my current visa was not illegible to be adjusted to a green card. I contacted my company's layer and then I found this forum. I spent days and days to read older posts. It helped me a lot.

In our case my husband and i,checked like a week after 1 of may to avoid congestion and page errors.Checked my entry first and after decode the O&0 of CN got:Your entry has not been selected blah, blah, blah.Said to my husband:you see,i told you, this lottery thing is to dificult to win, there are millions of people trying. He said:We still have a chance...i'm lucky you know?Checked my husband entry and he only took a glance of NL before starting to jump while saying:i won,i won...!!!He just knew because the letters were different.i tried to calm him down(and calm myself down):wait, let me read what it says.So i had to read the famous NL like 10 times to really believe that we actually had a shot.Like we're first timers ,no clue of last year desaster,or what a CN means,or anything,so that's why i think we got carried away for the adrenaline of the moment.
Regards.

This must be heartbreaking if you have to give back something that belongs to you. I am happy that i wasn't in your place.
I hope this will happen never again!

Gosh, it must be tough to get the selection letter just to be disqualified a couple of weeks later! But you are extremely lucky to get it again the next year. If I were you I'd buy lottery tickets regularly from now on :D

I'm also in IT, so I know how it goes. A single programmer is probably responsible for coding the random selection program, so unless they have good quality assurance / tester it's very easy to overlook. I also see abnormal cutoff progression for DV-2012 Asia, so that makes me uncomfortable.
