Was I on out of status?

Hi
I came on J visa and changed over to H1-B visa.
I filed H1 when J extension was valid but, it was
approved 18 days after my J extension expired.
I remained in USA since H1-B was under process
in immigration. Was this out of status?
I am planning to get stamping in Mexico. Is it
going to cause any problem for stamping?

Please suggest

No you have 60 days of grace period for J1 visa holders after the expiry of J-1 visa

 
 
But you can\'t get visa from Canada/Mexico any more..you have to go back to home country to get it

 
 
As per the latest immigration e-mail sent out by the ISO of my university

(that I have posted in many sub-forums like J1, H-1 forum on this site)
unless you have valid visa, you cant enter anymore. Automatic revalidation (people returning within 30 days with valid I-94 but expired visa were allowed to enter USA from canada/Mexico earlier)
has been suspended.
