Walk-in AP at Local Office???

Gurus please help:
Can we do walk-in AP on the same day at local office (even though I485 pending at service center) either for the first time or renewals? There were some confusing answers for this question. Some one please clarify once for all.

Also, if any one had done walk-in AP please post your experience.

I did a walk in AP renewal for my wife at INS Newark, They gave it the same day, Just have all the relevant documents ready.
Its not a Problem, the only hassle is waiting in various queues all day.

Do we have to put a medical emergency letter or something for relevant documents at INS Newark.
