Waiting time between Interview and Oath.

IBIS Procedure

INS performs background checks using the "IBIS" database for all types of applications and petitions, whether filed at the regional Service Centers or the local District Offices. These checks occur within 15 days of receiving the case and remain valid for 35 days. If the adjudication occurs more than 35 days after the IBIS check, a new check is required.

These timeframes can become an issue for Adjustment of Status (I-485) applications. In those cases, the Service Center sends an approval notice directing the applicant to the Local District Office for a passport stamp. If the passport stamp is done within 35 days of the last IBIS check, no additional check is needed. If a further IBIS check is needed before the passport can be stamped, it may take only a day at many of the local offices. However, if the check results in a "hit" (a match with a record on file of a person with a criminal issue or other serious problem) the case may take much longer to resolve.

Note that, since IBIS is a name check system, if one has a very common name there may be a "hit" based on the record of some other person who happens to have the same name. In the event of a hit, the local office is required to place a stamp in the passport as evidence of permanent resident status, valid for 30 days only. This stamp will provide evidence of authorization to work and will allow travel for the 30-day period. No mention was made regarding procedures if the matter is not cleared up within 30 days but, presumably, the person could obtain another stamp if needed.

has anyone heard about this check? and this checks is performed between interview and oath as well.

IBIS

Shaky,

I only heard about this secondary check from rumours on vatious forums. Your post was the most detailed one, you must have some good sources.

I wonder what happens if there is a "hit" and a person who successfully passed an interview has a record in this IBIS database (whatever record that may be). Is there another interview with a chance for an applicant to square things out if possible?

What kind of imformation are these? Unpaid taxes? (local, state), liens, judgements? Financial, civil, criminal?

no clue

Well, while i was being interviewd by examiner for my N400 , i noticed his computer has sticker on it saying ***IBIS***.
and my thinking was that they perform the IBIS check while they interview you. thats what i think because examiner had access to IBIS data .so he could have performed this misterious check right then since it only takes 30 to 60 seconds to perform IBIS check in data base.
I have read about IBIS check that it is also performed on POE's(like on airports and borders) and its is performed automativally by computer when they swipe ur passport OR any other documents. or it can be manual by entering the name.
I have read alot of posts by ppl who passed the interview and wait for oath for maximum of 8 months.

and some ppl in know in person got their oath letter in less then three weeks.

1 friend got his oath letter in 16 days
2 another firend got his oath letter in 6 days,( even though he had his interview 12 days after me )

so information we read or know makes me clueless.
and one more thing i would like to mention that I have a name change request in my application and those friends didnt have the name change request.

and they had interview results as follows...

_____X____ decision can not yet be made about ur application and INS will send u written notice about decision.

while my outcome was different and was straight FWD then them as...

____X____ Congratulaions! ur application for naturalization is recommended for approval. you will be notified when are where to report for oath ceremony.

and i am still waiting and they are already citizens...
its very impossible to know whats going on with ur case.
Another forum user *mariahhoneyy* has her interview in feb and she got her oath in July, about 5 months after interview.and in her posts while she was waiting for oath she was also confused.

anyone who can post anything about this plz do so..

Thank u very much..

Shaky.
