Waiting for Green Card at USA !!! DV Winner 2009

Hi Folks,
Normally, how long it takes to recieve the greencard after arriving to USA? Do we get anything like case number or something when we enter the entry point that defines about your case status..or Can we check it online about howz the processing going on? Its been 13 days i have been to the USA and received nothing yet.. and its really frustrating to wait for that.. coz we can do nothing i guess. Can we get SSN without Green Card?

Your green card is your visa stamped at a port of entry. You do not need to wait for the plastic to arrive within 30 days.
 
xpectator Bro, You can apply for your SSN at the nearest SSN Admin office with your passport with the Immigrant visa on it. No need to wait for the GC. I am also 2009 winner waitin for the GC here but already got the SSN.
 
advice:don't wait for the SSN just go apply for it immediately, it's faster. and the GC you should not wait for , it will come in 30 days and if you need it (I doubt) you can show the temporrary one in your passport. today I recieved my GC (after 31 day of my POE) and 4 days ago my SSN. I didn't know that I should apply here for SSN and that's why it took me so long. Thanks God everything turned right. By the way these SS Cards and GC are new and different from the older ones. good luck!
 
Thanks everybody for your valuable suggestions. Now i will go to SSA office tomorrow and apply for myself. So lets see how things turn. I will post it once i get the result ok.
