Wait for oci or apply for visitor visa?

If we plan to go to India in the next 1-2 months and i have mailed everything last monday (4.May), do you think I should apply for visitor visa or are there any chances of our getting the oci before then? Please let me know.

But, if we're in India and we get the 'Granted'/Acknowledged etc. (I don't even know how we receive this message), can we come back from our trip and then send the passports for OCI? Or is there a deadline for us to send within some no.of days?

Last question - can we apply for Indian Visitor Visa by mail? I hate to drive to D.C in that traffice and waste one whole day.

There is no deadline to pickup OCI docs once they are received at embassy/consulate - you can collect them whenever your return from India.

Re. visitor visa, all the instructions are here: https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/homepage - if you want to apply by mail, wait until about 10 days before your India trip to see what the status of your OCI application is and then make a decision. If you apply in person, the window can be narrower. Read the FAQs in the link above.
