VWP with inactive F-1 in passport? HELP, please!

My F-1 visa has just been issued and I'm allowed to enter the US in early August. I'd planned on entering the US in July on the Visa Waiver Program and exiting for 6 days (to London, which isn't my home country) and re-entering in August on F-1. I was told that this "should" be okay. But I've just learnt that people who enter on the VWP should not have other visas in their passport, even if they aren't yet valid. Does this mean I'll need to cancel my just-issued F-1 visa, enter as planned on the VWP and then reapply in London, where processing time is much longer?

As F1 you're allowed to enter US for at least 90 days ahead before your class begins.
