Latest Efforts at the VSC to Reduce the Frontlog

By Kim King Date: 9/18/2001

Yes, there is still a significant "frontlog" at the Vermont Service Center (VSC). However, officials at the VSC report that they are doing something about it. For those of you who do not already know, the "frontlog" is the collection of cases received by the service center that have not yet been entered into the data entry system nor have yet been issued receipt notices. Alternatively, for the playful, the "frontlogged" cases are the cases waiting to get into the backlog.

A report posted by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) states that the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) has recently changed the contractor operating its mailroom in an effort to reduce slowdowns. AILA reports that the contractor is now attempting to restructure the current data entry procedures in order to expedite the issuance of receipt notices. The contractor has also expanded its hours to now work 21 hours per day, six days per week. To top it all off, the service is considering opening a "surge facility" in Texas to help deal with the frontlog. (Is this really the height of convenience from the Vermont Center?)

Interestingly, the new contractor hired to combat the frontlog was hired shortly before INS received most of the cases filed under Section 245(i). Did the contractor know what would be involved in a revitalization effort on the existing data entry procedures at the INS? Was the contractor watching the news about all of the weddings to permanent residents that took place in March and April? Does the contractor like Texas toast?

We\'ll watch with curiosity as the mysteries unfold...

The new contractor is in place since over a month and we do,nt see any reduction in frontog.

Surprised!

I thought the \'frontlog\' problem was solved a while ago.

Keep hoping though.
