Voter Registration Question

Sorry to be so blond, but obviously this being my first go around with voter registration etc I just wanted to be sure. Here is my question I registered to vote prior to my local State (AL) primaries or whatever local elections they had in June. I did it through the rockthevote website and promptly received a cardboard postcard with my voting location. I did not vote in the primaries, but I intend to go vote for the presidential election. Do I need to re-register or am I good to go?

Check out the rules for your state - often you can do that online, because here in NY, you do not need to re-register for elections unless you have moved. Therefore, I think you are good to go regardless of whether or not you voted in the primaries.

I have more questions beside Jojo72's question. It is my first time to do vote-registering after I became a US citizen. I am a Maryland resident. I went thru the rockthevote website, filled out the form online, printed out the registration form, and mailed it to Annapolis election office for Md residents per instruction. I haven't received any confirmation or anything else.

1. Should I re-register at the MVA/DMV if I don't receive any confirmation?

2. What is the next step after I registered or re-registered? Should I receive the registration card in order to vote in November elections?

3. How does the voting registration work?

4. Finally, in the november presidential elections, what should I need to bring in order to vote? driver license, registration card, ssn, certificate of naturalization or passport, etc?

Voter reg procedures seem to vary depending on the state. The best place to start is the local Registrar of voters for your county. The laws vary vastly depending on your states. Also try to select the vote by mail option if available, which Calif allows (not all states do, some states don't allow perm absentee voter choice).

When we reg to vote, we just mailed the forms we got at the oath ceremony and then got a confirmation postcard about a month later. You don''t have to show Natz certf or any proof to vote, but that depends again on the state laws which may change.

Ironically, I think most States go by the honor system when it comes to voter registration. In other words, they do not verify citizenship at the time of registration.

In NYS, they only ask for either a copy of your SSN and home address (by using a utility bill) or your driver license's number.

The DMVs may now verify citizenship with the enactment of the Real ID Act. But not sure about other places.

Before you go and re-register, you need to verify if your previous registration attempt was succesful.

This is from Maryland's State Board of Election web site:

"How do I verify my registration?

You are considered a registered voter when you receive your Voter Notification Card from your local board of elections. If you do not receive your card three weeks after you submit an application, you should contact your local board of elections.

Registration is permanent as long as you continue to live in Maryland and keep your name and address current with your local board of elections. You do not have to re-register when you move within the State, but you must keep your address current."
