Volunteer Visa to work in US

I am interested in gaining some work experience for a non profitable organisation in New York.

Can I obtain a volunteer visa before comfirming place of employment?

When applying for entry into United States as a Voluntary Worker with Visa or under Visa Waiver Program, you should furnish a letter form the US Sponsor which contains

1. You Name, Date & Place Of Birth
2. Your Foreign Residence address.
3. The Name & address of initial destination in the USA
4. Duration of Stay in US.
