Vistor Visa - Is Return tickets needed?

My mom is coming to US next month. Though she has a 2 year visa I think the duration of her stay in US is determined by the person at port of entry. Since we don't know (although usually it is 6 months) how long she is gonna be here, is it compulsory for her to get the return tickets while she comes here?

Someone was telling me that immigration people at port of entry will ask for return tickets (as proof that she will be going back to India). So, my question is does she need to show the return tickets at port of entry? If not, I plan to get one way ticket and then later on buy tickets to go from here.

Thanks in Advance,

- Raja.

well the time stamped on the tickets usually is 6 months from date of entry. She can buy open return tkts from India if she wishes but are not needed

FYI
buying return tkts is cheaper than buying one way tkts. Open tkts allow atleast one change in travel plans free of cost.
