Sorry, though it\'s not the appropriate board, I am posting a question here. Let\'s say you got a visitor visa for 6months, and you got the passport stamp in January. But you entered in to US in March, can the person stay for 6months or need to leave by june per passport stamp?

Thanks in Advance.

If the stamp clearly says visa is expiring at certain date, that is when it will expire and that person is advised to leave by that date. You may also want to look at the I94.

Thanks. How do they determine the duration of stay(6months) on I-94? Is it based on the entry date or it can be different? Let me put it in simple way. My wife\'s due is in April and planning to bring my mother in law here in March for 6months. Is it ok to get the visa work done right now or better to do in March? I am trying to finish this early to avoid tension at the last minute, but at the same time I am looking for 6months stay.

JoeF is right

My parents got a 6 month visitor\'s visa in end-November. They finally decided to come in
mid-May next year( a few days before the expiry). However, at POE, they got a I-94 that allowed them to
stay until November ( 6 months).
Also, if you want to extend their stay past the date stamped on their I-94, you can
file an application at the INS to extend their stay. It takes a few months for the INS to
process this application. INS usually grants these applications, and it is legal for them to
stay until this application is adjudicated, even though their I_94 has expired.
Your praents can also get a 10-year visitor visa from the consulate. However, that still
doesn\'t affect their period of stay. That is decided by the date stamped on their I-94 at POE.
