My mother has been in the US for the last 6 months on a B-2 Visa. She has been helping us with our very sick daughter. We applied for extension (without the return ticket), got rejected. She had to leave the country on short-notice. Left, the day of her I-94 status expiry.
Stayed 10 days in India and had a tough experience at Newark with a valid 10 year visa. The officer questioned her without looking at the Doctor's letters or any of the other documentation (lack of respect). Referred her to another officer who, again without looking at any of the documented reasons, gave her 3 month stay and stamped on the passport that my mother cannot extend her stay. These officers treated her without much respect. My mother was on the verge of tears. The officer said that if she cried, then, she would only give her stay fo one month.
Fortunately, the officers did not cancel the 10-year tourist visa!
I hope this helps someone else in a similiar situation.
God Bless!
