Visit outside US while N400 being processed

Hello All,

This looks like a helpful source of info. Thanks in advance for the help.

My parents have applied for their citizenship recently (they've been perm. res. for 5 yrs.). Their fingerprinting appointment is set for Oct. 14 in San Antonio. Their actual interview date isn't set yet. Since San Antonio is really fast these days, we are expecting the interview date to be sometime in Oct/Nov.

I have two questions.

1) My parents need to leave the US for a couple of months during Nov/Dec timeframe. Can they give their fingerprints, the interview (whenever that is scheduled) and then leave the US for sometime before the oath? Or is there a requirement that they have to remain within the US for the entire time?

2) Their first fingerprinting app. came within 16 days of filing (filed Aug 7th, letter came on Aug 21 that the fingerprinting was to be done on Aug 23rd). We had to reschedule the app. because they are in Michigan right now. The rescheduled date came to be Oct. 14th (go figure!!). So, my question is, can I just drive down to San Antonio (or call, wish me luck on that) to perhaps ask them to allow us to go to the App. support ctr earlier than Oct 14 to give the fingerprints. What are the odds on that?

Though it is not required to be in the US all the after applying N-400 but the timing for your parents may not work out very well. This is because first of all there is no guarantee that their interview will be completed before November and secondly if it does then oath ceremony will most likely be within the next month or so. So, in any case a two month absense is only going to cause further delay. Now short trips are totally fine. I have personally travelled twice out of country while my N-400 is being processed.

Many centers allow walk-in finger printing way before the scheduled date. But technically, they are supposed to deny out of cycle walk-ins. So, it really depends on the center.
