What is difference betn NVC case number and visa number.

How to interprit NVC case number: BMB 204 -**-****

I know BMB is for bomday consulate and 2004 is year.
How about other digits?

NVC number is just for case reference. If your case is approved, you get a Visa number. Visa number means a green card.

I believe it can be interpretted as:
The 3 letter post designation,
followed by four digits which represent the year in which NVC received the case
followed by three digit Julian date (+500) that the petition was received (Example - 275 th day i.e. Oct 1st would be 775)
followed by the number of petitions assigned to that post on that day.
