Visa extension while coming back from India

Hello all

My situation:

F-1 visa status: Expired
I-20 status: Going to be expired on Dec 31 2002
Mentioned on I-94 card: F-1 D/S
Travel Plans to India: Dec 7 to Jan 7

An advisor at my school's ISSS told that I would be issued a new I-20 for travel (once I complete the requirements for re-instatement of I-20, which is not a problem) and that I-20 would be valid till May 2003.

I must apply for a visa (in India) to be able to come back to US and finish my MS (by May 2003). The advisor indicated the possibility of my visa application being denied.

My questions:

1) Any change in the procedure of my visa application?

2) Are there any cases till now where a student has gone back to India and while trying to get a new visa, got denied of his/her application?

3) Are there any other issues that I need to be aware of?

Make sure your school has put your name in the ISEAS/SEVIS database, as otherwise you cannot get an F1 visa stamp. If your work is on the technology alert list (see travel.state.gov, and use search), and the consulate decides to do a secutirty check, then it may take a several weeks to get the visa. Also you should maintain nonimmigrant intent. Good luck.
