Venezuelan expired passport - Lottery 2021 selected

Hello everyone,

I got selected for the DV2021 lottery, i applied last year around October-November, and my passport expired in February-2020.

As you may know, Venezuela is in a awkward for the last years, there is no paper for new passports so expired passports go through 2 options: pay for a "2 year extension" or follow an agreement between Venezuela Assembly and other governments that says the expired passports can be used for 5 more years after expired (there is an article on this topic from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in their help section).

So my question is, can i proceed with the DV process with the "5 years after expired thing" or should i try to get a "2 year extension" ?

Regards,
Miguel

There is a website run by the Department of State called “reciprocity by country”. This website has the official guidance on how the immigration authorities are to consider documents. This is what it currently says about Venezuelan passports. So you will be fine within that 5 year timeframe.

Effective, June 7, 2019, Venezuelan passport validity was extended an additional five years past the date of expiration printed in the passport. Venezuelan passport holders who have already received an extension or “prórogga” will have the validity period extended by five years from the end date of the extension. NVC will accept all Venezuelan passports, valid or expired, so long as it is still considered valid after adding five years to the printed expiration date.

Thanks,

This may be out of your reach, but for the international travel i will need to get the "2 year extension" otherwise airlines will not sell me a ticket. Should there be any problem if i advance in the DV process with my current passport using the 5 year frame as the "expired date" in the DS260 form, and later on "if i go the visa approved" travel with this same passport that will also have the 'prorogga' of 2 years printed in another page.

There shouldn’t be a problem with that, but if you’re going to the need the two year extension to travel anyway I’m not sure why you’re asking ...?

Because the 2 year extension will probably take several months to be processed and it will have a different expired date (i will know which expired date is, just when i get my hands on it) that what i will be putting right now in the DS260 form.

I just dont want to miss this chance because of a expired date problem, as im pretty confident in all the requirements documents that the ask for aside from this one.

It’s the same passport. If it’s going to take a few months to get the extension, and depending what your case number is, then send the passport off to be processed and either submit DS260 when you get it back, or submit DS260 now and update the expiry date later (unlock DS260) when you know what it is.
What you don’t want to happen is not have your passport at hand when you get called for interview, which seems a risk to me if it takes a few months to get this done. So you either do it well before, like now/soon, or you take the chance of sending it away after you get your visa.
