Hello, mu mother got her green card through vawa, violance against women act ...my question is ...how long does she have to wait to apply for citizenship and what documents should we send with the application?? has anyone successfully obtained citizenship from having green card from vawa??

please share your experiences and opinions
thank you

Unless your mom marries an American or joins the armed forces (and stays for a year), I believe a green card is a green card. She'll be able to apply in 5 years like everyone else (well, give or take that 90 days).

Check out the Guide to Naturalization. It has a good explanation.

No that is not true. A person who obtained a green card as a battered spouse of a United States Citizen (approved I360) can apply for naturalization in 2 yrs and 9 months after they got their green card. SEC 319(A) of the INA clearly states that.

As for the documents required to file

1. Completed and signed N400
2. Photos with the name and A# on the back
3. Copy of the Front and back of the green card
4. Copy of the approved I360
5. Copy of the divorce decree
6. Check for 400$ made out to Department of Homeland Security.
7. Copy of speeding tickets etc if any.

Good luck on the Citz.

Hi,

I received my GC through VAWA in September 2004. Still living with my husband, and he changed a lot after i received my GC. I was ready to move out of the house when he asked me for a second chance and i decide to see how things were going, he did changed a lot. Now, 2008, i want apply for naturalization. I have no clue if my time is correct to send the papers, but since my marriage, we fill tax together, we have a joint bank account and we live together for the past 6 years.
I never hear of anyone in the same situation as i'm now, but i will post everything here, June is my time to send the papers. I'm really nervours about it, because become a citizen is a dream for me.
Thank for all the people who take time to post new experiences to help others,

M
