Validity of H1B approval

Hi,
My application was selected in 2008 lottery I got approval in May last year. I haven't gone for the stamping yet as my project got delayed. As the market situation is bad it might get delayed further 5-6 months due to some funding issues. How long can I wait before my H1B approval is valid? or what is the last date that I can get my visa stamped?
 
Are you in or out of the US?
If out of US, there is no expiry for the approved H1 petition, but after a long time the employer has to prove that the job still exists.
